We have known for a while that Warner Bros. has been trying to adapt the popular 1988 anime Akira for a while now. Recently, its been rumored that Daniel Espinosa(Life) and David F. Sandberg(Lights Out) have been in the running to direct the adaptation but now we have another name thats reportedly top choice for Warner Bros.
According to Tracking Board, Jordan Peele is in negotiations with Warner Bros. to direct Akira. WB is reportedly trying very hard to get him committed into making the film for them. This extreme interest in him comes after his directorial-debut Get Out was astoundingly well received from both audiences and critics. Get Out has a made a whopping $156,270,800 worldwide so far on a 4.5 million dollar budget.
The 1988 film is known to be visually stunning but very weird. This type of adaption is going to be very difficult because some things just don’t translate well in live-action. I think Jordan Peele is a good choice because even he showed us with Get Out that he knows how to balance a story with interesting visuals. The only things that worries me is that plenty of other directors have tried to make this into a film but none of succeeded. But who knows, perhaps Jordan Peele has a great idea for the flm and Warner Bros. is hoping that they will finally have this movie made.
For those who don’t know too much about the anime, here’s the official synopsis for the film;
