DC’s Rebirth has been wildly successful, with both high ratings and high sales (1). “And when things are up, it’s a good time to take risks,” says Scott Snyder, who is heading DC’s next big thing: Metal (2). Dark Knights: Metal is an upcoming August event featuring some of the biggest names in the DC Comics art scene, including Jim Lee, John Romita Jr., and Greg Capullo (3). The event, set in place since Snyder first started writing Batman, will encompass all of the DC universe, its multiverse, and a new realm described by Snyder as “the dark multiverse” (2). This article contains information about the upcoming event.
Dark Knights: Metal will be preluded by two stories: Dark Days: The Forge and Dark Days: The Casting. The Forge, set to release on June 6/14, will follow a lineup of some of DC’s best heroes as they investigate Batman and his connection with a threat to “the entire multiverse.” The book will be written by Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV, with art by Andy Kubert, John Romita Jr., and Jim Lee (4).
The Casting will hit shelves one month later, on July 12th, featuring the same creative and seems to focus on Batman, Green Lantern (Hal Jordan), Duke, Hawkman, and the Joker. It is difficult to tell the Joker’s role in the story so far, besides that his “surprise attack threatens to lay waste to all of Batman’s carefully laid plans.” We also have a piece of art with the Joker, Batman, Green Lantern, and Duke looking in shock at something currently unknown. It is possible the Joker will ally with the heroes to “prevent the forces of darkness from consuming the DC universe” (5). And Dark Knights: Metal will begin in August (6).
Snyder and Capullo have still revealed very little information about the main Metal event so far. But we do know how excited the dynamic duo is: “I’ve been planning Metal for as long as I’ve been writing Batman. But this is bigger than Batman. Greg and I started dropping clues during Court of Owls, we continued through our Joker stories and we placed our biggest hints in the run that culminated with Batman #50. And now we’re back to tell a story that breaks everything apart. This will be the definitive project of our careers. Metal takes us in an entirely new direction. Greg and I will dig beneath the surface of all the stories we’ve told to find a place of terror and twisted nightmares,” Snyder said at Fan Expo Dallas. Capullo added that they’re “primed and ready to blow it up (6).”
Even with such little information known, excitement is building just by the creative team. We may not know what will happen but we do know it will probably be very good. For more information, check out the sources below:
