Josh Boone’s long-awaited X-Men spinoff film The New Mutants is finally approaching filming, and we’re now learning details on what the tone and plot will be like.
Director Josh Boone said a lot about what the inspiration and tone for the film will be. Previously leaked animatics showed that the film would be based on the “Demon Bear Saga” told in New Mutants #18-20 by Chris Claremont and Bill Sienkiewicz. Boone seemingly confirms this talking about his love for this particular run and Sienkiewicz as an artist, calling him “one of the most amazing comic book artists ever.” That run established the tone that the film will follow.
“[It was] a darker and more surreal and impressionistic X-Men series than we’d ever seen before. It felt like Stephen King meets John Hughes”
It seems that Stephen King feel will be a big influence, as the tone will be that of a horror movie.
“We are making a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe. There are no costumes. There are no supervillains. We’re trying to do something very, very different.”
It’s certainly an interesting take that would make the film stand out from the rest of the, sometimes generic, X-Men franchise. But it sounds like the success of the very different films Deadpool and Logan will have more influence than X-Men: Apocalypse.
“We love that Fox wants to make all these different X-Men spinoffs as drastically different as they can.”
The film will, however, be shooting with a PG-13 rating in mind. Boone wouldn’t give away any plot details, but sources gave Entertainment Weekly the first synopsis, and it sounds as different as you would hope.
“Held in a secret facility against their will, five new mutants have to battle the dangers of their powers, as well as the sins of their past. They aren’t out to save the world — they’re just trying to save themselves”
It sounds like a darker, smaller-scale film about teenage mutants just coming to grips with their powers. They will also hopefully be fighting a Demon Bear while they do that.
Rumors also indicate some new casting will be in the horizon. Henry Zaga, who you might have recently seen in a small role in the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why, is very close to being cast as Sunspot. There is also talk, albeit less strong, of Rosario Dawson joining as well.
And if you have any doubts on how this will all turn out, Boone talked about how much this project means to him and how he’s been a fan since his childhood.
“You can’t have a bigger nerd or fan making this. It’s so important to me. I’m not the 12-year-old who decided to write Stephen King a letter and loved Marvel Comics anymore, but I try to hold myself accountable to that kid. Because that kid is what keeps me from becoming a Hollywood whore. I look back and think: Would he think this would be cool? Would he proud of me? Did I fulfill the dream we had when we were kids? So yeah, you can definitely say I’m excited.”
The New Mutants will release on April 13, 2018.
