Todd McFarlane finally confirmed that he’s writing and directing a Spawn reboot at Blumhouse Studios. Now he’s revealed who he wants for the lead: Oscar winner Leonardo DiCaprio.

Now before you think that means Leo could play the undead avenger, he wouldn’t be playing Spawn. McFarlane’s script doesn’t actually have the title character at the center of the movie, but rather focuses on detectives Sam and Twitch, with Spawn as a mysterious hidden figure that the plot revolves around. And it’s the role of Twitch that McFarlane hoped could be filled by DiCaprio.

“Given that the big lead was Twitch when I was writing, I had Leonardo DiCaprio in my head. I don’t know if people have seen The Wolf of Wall Street, but there is a manicness in him, he was going up and down, and up and down, and up and down; it was almost dizzying, emotionally, to go with him. And there are parts in this movie where I’m going to need an actor to be able to make those moves. Both in terms of normality, in terms of manic, in terms of anger, and in terms of joy – and be able to go to some extremes in it.”

Sounds like a pretty simple reason for wanting him: he has incredible range. And apparently the role of Twitch requires similar emotional complexity to that of Leo’s previous work.

This doesn’t actually mean Leo is in talks- just that the director had him in mind when writing the script. A smaller-budget project like this isn’t typical of him either, so don’t get your hopes too high. Still, a Spawn movie with such a high-caliber lead would be great to see.
