The current status of ‘The Batman’ has left many with a sense of confusion. The original film was to be co-written by Geoff Johns and Ben Affleck, with Affleck also tabbed to direct. The script originally featured Deathstroke as the main antagonist, with Joe Manganiello set to portray the iconic D.C. mercenary. As Affleck left the directing chair, so went the script. Matt Reeves then stepped in to direct and began a complete rewrite. That has left Deathstroke’s status up in the air. Mangianello addressed that issue in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
Mangianello was asked if he had any information regarding his involvement in ‘The Batman’:
“I don’t. Well, I do but nothing I can share. I know everything but I can’t say any of it.”
He was then asked if his comment should be taken in a more upbeat or somber way he said:
“[Pause.] I’m shooting for a neutral tone”
Finally, he was asked when we should expect some clarity regarding the issue:
“It’s not up to me. That’s a good question for Warner Bros. and D.C.”
Take these comments as you will but they are pretty standard when it comes to news regarding superhero films. Actors are instructed to say nothing and that seems to be the case here with Mangianello.
When asked, Reeves hasn’t shot down the idea of keeping Deathrtoke as the villain but with a complete rewrite, it’s difficult to say one way or the other what the outcome may be.
