Archer is an American adult animated spy sitcom created by Adam Reed for the FX network. The series focuses on the life and exploits of Sterling Archer, the self-proclaimed ‘world’s greatest secret agent’ and premiered on 17th September 2009.
The show stars H Jon Benjamin as Sterling Archer, Judy Greer as Cheryl Tunt, Amber Nash, as Pam Poovey, Lucky Yates as Doctor Krieger, Jessica Walter as Malory Archer, Chris Parnell as Cyril Figgis, Aisha Tyler as Lana Kane and Adam Reed as Ray Gillette.
The main reason that ‘ARCHER’ is so impressive and captivates audiences is its humor, each of their characters has a different sense of humor, Sterling Archer is the satirical-esque humor, Cheryl has more of an insane type of humor and both Malory and Cyril are the ‘straight man/woman’ in the cast. The different types of humor creates an hilarious dynamic where each cast member’s humor jumps off each other which leads to an great sense of chemistry between the cast, which leads to more laughs for the viewers as well as more investment in the viewers for each character, as even if you do not like one character, you don’t want them to leave to break up that great dynamic between the team.
Another reason ‘ARCHER’ is such a successful animation series is due to how it includes a fresh narrative every episode/season, the latest season was based inside Sterling Archer’s brain during his coma, with him imagining himself being a private detective in the 1930s, although the latest season was mostly just one continous story, in previous seasons, almost every episode had a different location, narrative and different main characters however they all culminated in the timeline and almost every episode adds a piece to the timeline which leads to very minimal filler episodes, this helps to keep the plot ongoing whilst keeping adventurous episodes.
‘ARCHER’ also benefits from having actual continuity, whereas in shows such as Family Guy where you’ll only see select events from 1 in 10 episodes be added to actual continuity, almost every episode in ‘ARCHER’ adds a piece to their continuity which leads to fans being invested in the ongoing story and wanting to see what the outcome will be. Having a continuity in an animated series is rare to see sometimes so it is a breath of fresh air to see it in ‘ARCHER’ alongside how it helps to benefit the character growth in the show.
