One of the biggest movies to be released by Marvel Studios next year is Avengers: Infinity War, and the Guardians of the galaxy are set to be a major part of it. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 had an end credit scene teasing that the next time we see the crew it will a while later. Now director James Gunn confirms the scene is actually set during Avengers: Infinity War.

In the end credit scene, an adolescent-looking Groot was shown doing what most people at his age do; play video games. This led many viewers to believe that the scene is set years after the events of Vol. 2, now it’s been clarified by the director himself.

While speaking with Cinema Blend, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Director James Gunn confirmed that the end credit scene featuring Groot does indeed take place at the same time as next year’s Avengers: Infinity War. Here’s the whole interaction;

  • Cinema Blend: Having seen the Infinity War footage at D23 and Comic-Con, Groot did look very similar to the way he looks in the post-credits scene…

    James Gunn: He’s exactly the same.

    Cinema Blend: He is exactly the same.

    James Gunn: That’s exactly the Groot we designed for Infinity War.

    Cinema Blend: So then that scene is set four years after…

    James Gunn: Well, basically those are at the same time.

So the Guardians have been together for a long time when we see them in the next Avengers film. This makes sense, as Guardians 2 itself takes place around six months after the first film. The first one came out in 2014, 4 years later the Avengers and Guardians battle Thanos in 2018.

I personally don’t know exactly how to feel about this:not seeing so much of their development as a team is kind of troubling. Hopefully this will be handled well in future films, and fans will still feel like they’ve grown with the team.
