The latest report on the upcoming Marvel series signals the arrival of two characters well linked to the duo of Cloak and Dagger.
Two character descriptions leaked thanks to That Hashtag Show, revealing new additions to the cast of characters for the upcoming Freeform series Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger. Anyone familiar with the classic Cloak and Dagger stories from the ’80’s, which most of you probably aren’t, will recognize the characters immediately.
The first is listed as “Father Francis Diaz”, who is speculated to actually be Father Francis Delgado. The description reads:
Pastor Diaz didn’t always intend to become a man of the cloth. Struggling with many demons, Francis Diaz joined the military looking for guidance and stability. But he found himself in religion, becoming a chaplain and pursuing advanced degrees in theology and education to try to discover his own humanity. Still without answers but armed with a position at a prestigious prep school, Pastor Diaz is now helping sculpt young minds. As a school counselor and priest, Diaz is a rock to Travis and sees a lot more in the boy that he would be comfortable admitting. Oppressed by the collar, he leads more through words than example as he still struggles daily with the chaste life he has chosen. Try as he may, Francis still finds himself slipping. He can’t escape his own deep shame. To pay penance, he forces himself to witness the life he could have had, seeing the love that got away. Pastor Diaz is constantly seeking redemption in spite of the fact that he’s not sure he deserves it. But it is in his raw humanity that we see the hand of God. RECURRING
Father Delgado debuted in Cloak and Dagger #1 as a priest who gave the duo shelter in his church. He saw Cloak as a demon consumed by darkness and Dagger as a helpless captive of their vigilante lifestyle. This description says he’s a mentor to “Travis”, which could actually be Tyrone, aka Cloak himself. This could give them a more nuanced relationship than in the comics.
The second is for “Detective Callahan”, who is likely Detective Brigid O’Reilly. The description reads:
A self-possessed woman in her 3o’s, Detective Bailey Callahan comes off as cold or unfriendly upon first impression. Her New York sensibilities have hardened her from being too friendly or open, setting her apart from her Louisiana counter parts. Accustomed to working in a man’s world, Callahan isn’t looking to be “one of the guys.” She isn’t going to let a room full of men dictate how often she changes the color of her fingernails (almost daily). She won’t meet expectations of women cops as ball busting bitches. The rest of the station need to find their way to her impression of the world, not the other way around. Callahan believes in justice and doesn’t thing that anyone should be above it, including other cops. Especially other cops…RECURRING
Also debuting in 1983’s Cloak and Dagger #1, Detective O’Reilly is a solitary policewoman who pursues Cloak and Dagger through their war on crime. Eventually she would be killed by criminals but ressurected as the superpowered Mayhem, pursuing a similar path to Cloak and Dagger’s.
The two characters have a deep history with the titular superheroes. Them and their occupations tie heavily into the themes of Cloak and Dagger’s stories. They each struggle with their own morals and places in the world, and question if Cloak and Dagger are solving problems or creating them. Their need to stay close to them but reluctance to accept them is reflective of Tandy and Tyrone’s own relationship. And these casting calls show the series will be staying closer to the original comics than we knew.

Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger will premiere in Winter 2018.
It is a coming-of-age series based on the beloved Marvel characters. Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt) and Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph) come from starkly different backgrounds, each growing up with a secret they never dared share with another soul.
Once a privileged little girl, Tandy Bowen watched as her family was destroyed by a disastrous storm that uprooted her life. Now in her late teens, an unexpected encounter with a boy named Tyrone sparks a life changing event.
Young Tyrone Johnson wanted nothing more than to prove he was fearless. But when everything he held close was taken away, life taught Tyrone to be afraid. Now older and more sheltered, Tyrone closes himself off. But when he meets a girl named Tandy his life changes forever.
