The Marvel Cosmic Universe is growing. Thor of course was the beginning, and GOTG has added more depth. GOTG is basically the forefront of the Marvel Cosmic Universe (being that there are hardly any humans or Earth scenes in two films), so it only makes sense for James Gunn to be in control of it. GOTG Vol. 2 was definitely a hit this summer, and opened the Cosmic Verse even more. They hinted at Adam Warlock (again), gave us another Howard the Duck scene, and showed us the original Guardians. The Cosmic Verse will truly be great.
Although, when word got out about Gunn working with Kevin Fiege to shape this Universe, there were a few concerns. The thought was that the whole universe would look like GOTG, instead of having it’s own unique tone. James Gunn recently spoke with Collider, and put those concerns to rest. Gunn said, “Marvels cosmic side will be just like it’s earthbound [cinematic] counterparts, and be visually/tonally diverse.”
“I would hope that [with] the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole, every movie has its own unique feel and tone. And so, if it’s a James Gunn movie, it’s different from a Ryan Coogler movie, which is different from a Taika movie, which is different from a Peyton Reed movie. I think all the movies can be their own genre, they can be their own thing in the same way that if you grew up reading Marvel Comics, all the writers and the artist of the comic books brought very different tones to each of those,” Gunn said.
For fans who have been wanting to see the Marvel Cosmic Universe expanded beyond GOTG and Thor, this is great. Even though Fox has rights to Silver Surfer, Stan Lee wants a movie to be made. Hopefully, after seeing the Sony/Marvel Studios deal; Fox finally decides to work with them and share characters as well. A Silver Surfer movie in the MCU would be amazing. Hopefully, we see more of the original GOTG crew in the future also. There are so many characters in the Cosmic Verse that could be put to good use, maybe even a reboot of Howard the Duck. The future of the Marvel Cosmic Universe lays in the hands of James Gunn and Kevin Fiege. The first two GOTG movies were amazing, so expect no less for the Cosmic Universe as a whole.
Thor: Ragnorok will definitely add on to the Cosmic Verse. We’re getting a mix of two amazing comic plots. Thor: Ragnorok and Planet Hulk are two beloved comic plots among fans. They will help Fiege and company shape the Cosmic Verse even more.
