The Defenders have assembled! No that doesn’t sound right. After three episodes of what was mostly 4 separate story-lines, we have our first look at our heroes together. Although, as can be expected, some are not a fan of the idea of teaming up. So let’s break it down with a review of Episodes 4 and 5 of ‘The Defenders’.
EPISODE 4 “Royal Dragon”
If you watched any promotional material, you have likely seen clips of the heroes eating at a restaurant together, Royal Dragon. That is the primary location of the episode. The team sits and eat as they explain how each of them want to go about the situation. They all seem to want to go about it alone, expect for Danny. Fun-loving Danny sees a potential for the group to work together to defeat their common enemy.
As they continue to talk, they agree more and more on how to go about things until Stick shows up. That’s where things sort of go off the rails. Stick begins explaining more of the situation, even giving us a possible answer about who our mystery villain, Alexandra, really is.
Alexandra arrives to inform the heroes that there’s no point in trying to stop her, leaving Elektra to deal with them. Setting up for an action packed Episode 5.
This episode relied heavily on character beats and motivation. For the most part, the titular heroes have never interacted; so this episode was used as a way for them to understand each-others motivations. That worked well for the most part but felt tired after a certain point. The constant bickering between everyone made the episode begin to drag towards the end.
However, the beginning of the episode started off strong. The interactions at first were fun to watch, especially if you have been following these series since the beginning. Having the four heroes on screen together interacting made for a win of an episode.
EPISODE 5 “Take Shelter”
The episode begins with an epic fight between The Hand and Defenders. Following the altercation, the oncoming threat leaves the heroes to get their loved ones to safety. They take them all to a police station, with many supporting character from all the shows being on screen togethor for the first time.
The Hand then beings to question their leadership as their plans continue to fail, one that may affect Elektra. Matt is forced to make a choice about revealing information, one that causes a tiff between the team.
Elektra is conflicted about her place, which leads her to a familiar spot. All the pieces are in place for a heated Episode 6.
“Take Shelter” started off hot, with what was a great action scene. Then things take there time to marinate, every key character going to their specific loved one, which seemed sort of tedious and made the meat of the episode a little lacking.
Things went into accelerate towards the end of the episode, with tensions riding high, the show got better and better. It was the quality of episode you’ve come to expect for the Marvel Netflix shows.
