If you’re one of the many fans hoping the famous Born Again story from Daredevil comics could be adapted, Daredevil star Charlie Cox agrees with you. SPOILER WARNING for the end of The Defenders.
Fans of the comics might’ve recognized a key character being referenced in the final episode of The Defenders: Maggie, Matt Murdock’s mother. She’s a character that was first revealed in Frank Miller’s famous story “Born Again“, in which the Kingpin discovers Daredevil’s secret identity and sets about ruining his life. It’s the most acclaimed Daredevil story of all time- even one of Marvel’s most acclaimed.
Wilson Fisk’s appearance in season 2 of Daredevil had fans speculating about a possible adaptation, as the Kingpin began gathering information on Matt after he threatened legal action. The Hollywood Reporter had a chance to ask Charlie Cox if he’d like the third season to be inspired by the famous arc.
“For sure. That’s such an amazing story. Everyone who loves Daredevil loves Born Again. You can’t not. And if that’s the case, then the implications of that would be very exciting to me. That would be great. Having said that, I know we don’t tend to follow any story blueprints too closely, because if you do, then you become a foregone conclusion. There may be elements from Born Again, but I’m sure there will be elements that are unfamiliar and surprising and different in order for the show to be compelling to fans who know the comics very well. If we start making Born Again page-for-page, then the people who have read it and loved it — the hardcore fans — they won’t have too much drama.”
With Kingpin gathering info on Matt Murdock and Maggie’s debut, the elements for the story are already in place. But don’t think that’s a definite confirmation yet; he’s only saying he wants it, not that it will happen. He specifies earlier in the interview that he’s generally unaware on future story directions.
“I honestly have no idea. Whenever I think I know where something’s going or what something’s going to mean, I’m often completely wrong and surprised by the scripts when I read them. I almost prefer not to speculate. God knows. I could see it going many different ways for him.”
So what will really happen in Daredevil season 3 is still a mystery. Filming is expected to start this year with a release date in 2018. Stay tuned to SuperBroMovies for news on Daredevil and all other Marvel properties.
