The past week as been full of new DC film news that just keeps on coming. The biggest surprise was the reveal that Warner Bros. and DC entertainment are planning a joker origin story outside of the current DC film universe. The Hangover director Todd Phillips is on board to direct and co write the script with Scott Silver. The line that really added the most shock value was the one of Martin Scorsese over seeing the project as a producer. Many questions as to how this film came to be and how it could work were beginning to construct inside the minds of many fans. Because this is set in a different timeline- would that mean no Jared Leto? We can only make hard assumptions on a few aspects of the film, but new information has surfaced out of a small rumor.
This new information spills out of former MMA fighter Brendan Schaub. He just so happens to be friends with director Todd Phillips agent, Todd Feldman. During a recent interview on the Joe Rogan Experience he managed to spill a few possible details from this exciting project that is coming from his friends.
“My boy Todd Feldman put this together with Todd Phillips. It’s dark. It’s like a dark Joker. As a kid, he had a permanent smile and everyone made fun of him. It’s like on the streets of Brooklyn. It’s super dark and real.”
He is of course insinuating two things here. The first is that this will be a dark interpretation of his origin story. This is not really news and may seem obvious to many. The real question to ask here is – to what levels of darkness will this film reach? The second point that he is leading to is that this version of the character will sport a permanent smile- from a very young age too. Jack Nicholson’s Joker rocked a permanent smile in Tim Burton’s Batman. Heath Ledger’s Joker had scars that resembled a permanent smile and Jared Leto’s Joker had neither of these two features. If this Joker does indeed have a permanent smile then that surely means that Leto will not be involved in this project. Is it time for the Joker to rock this look yet again on the big screen or is it still time for new looks? Fans will surely find plenty of time to debate on this subject.
Schaub’s comments are really interesting, but at the end of the day we must take this with a huge grain of salt. His words only somewhat carry weight because of his connections to Phillip’s agent. If he does know anything there is no telling if that information is reliable enough. The film is also in the very early stages of development. This rumor comes with great speculation and unfortunately, these types of conversations will have to get fans through until more official announcements come. Scorsese’s name and possible influence on the film’s style and time period in Gotham City is already enough to get many fans to the theater.
Phillips and Silver have confirmed that they are currently still working on the script.
