Pre-production for the highly anticipated DCEU film, Shazam movie is underway. Fans have been speculating on what actor could star as the main character, Billy Batson. According to, the frontrunners have been revealed. They also have an apparent working synopsis and character bio for Billy Batson

John Cena and Joshua Sasse are apparently the two frontrunners to play Billy Batson, aka Shazam. John Cena, as you probably already know, is the world renowned wrestler. He has become a bit of a pop culture phenomenon, and he has been making the rounds in movies as of late. Joshua Sasse is a less popular, British actor, but he is best known for known for playing Galavant in ABC’s Galavant.

I do not really know anything about Joshua Sasse, but I think John Cena is a great choice, and seeing him on screen with Dwane Johnson as Shazam’s main villain Black Adam, would be incredible. He has also proven from movies like Trainwreck that he has the comedic chops necessary to play Billy Batson. also revealed a working synopsis for the movie:

Based on the DC Comics character “Shazam!” Billy Batson becomes Captain Marvel, the world’s mightiest mortal, when he says the magic word “Shazam!” The name is an acronym for six gods and heroes of the ancient world as well as their attributes. The wisdom of Solomon, strength of Hercules, stamina of Atlas, power of Zeus, courage of Achilles and speed of Mercury.

That synopsis is apparently the framework for what the movie will follow, and it appears to stay true to the comics, which is always a good thing.

The character bio for Billy Batson was also revealed:

Male, 12-15 years old. A teenager who becomes Captain Marvel, the world’s mightiest mortal. Granted access to incredible powers by the wizard Shazam, he speaks the wizard’s name and is struck by a lightning bolt that gives him the powers of the gods.

That also adheres to the source material, so it looks like the Shazam movie is on the right track.

Shazam! is being directed by David F. Sanberg, and it scheduled to start filming in February of next year, meaning it should be the next DCEU movie after Aquaman.
