In a recent interview ODE interview for the Destiny 2 launch, Jared Leto shed some light on WB’s plans for upcoming Joker films. There was recently a great deal of information (and controversy) surrounding DC’s upcoming film slate. You can check out the interview below and the Joker question pops up at 00:55.
The interviewer asked him about both rumored Joker movies: one origin movie (supposedly not with Leto in the role as WB seems to want Leonardo DiCaprio who may “sport a permanent smile”) and another with Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie). Leto admits he is “a little confused too” in regards to exactly what is going on but he does think he is playing Joker in the Harley Quinn vs. Joker movie and does know there are “a couple of things happening in the DC world.”
Leto then goes on to say how much he enjoyed playing the Joker and getting in the villain’s head but recognizes that he has no control or ownership over the character as whoever plays him has “the honor of holding the baton for a little while and then passing it off.” Leto is obviously referring to previous actors and voice actors who have taken on the role, including Mark Hamill, the late Heath Ledger, and Jack Nicholson. And of course he may be referring as well to being either replaced or joined by another actor.
Leto then finishes, saying, “…there are films in development and I’m excited to see what comes from them.”
