When it was announced that Colin Trevorow has stepped down from directing Episode IX, many fans speculated that The Last Jedi director, Rian Johnson, would return to direct the next episode. There were even some reports that he was Lucasfilm’s first choice to take over as director, but according to Rian Johnson himself, he doesn’t know what’s going to happen with it.
In an interview at a Japanese press conference, Rian Johnson said this:
“It was never in the plan for me to direct Episode IX, so I don’t know what’s going to happen with it. For me, I was entirely focused on Episode VIII and having this experience and now I’m just thinking of putting the movie out there and seeing how audiences respond to it.”
He went on to add:
“So no, I’m not really thinking about that now,” he continued. “Whoever does it, I’m going to be really excited to be an audience member again. And to sit down and see what the next filmmaker has to show us and where this story ends up going.”
While Johnson doesn’t specifically say that he’s not doing it, he strongly suggests that it won’t happen, and it appears that he hasn’t been involved with the process so far. It seems that he really just wants to focus on the movie that he’s putting out now, and he doesn’t want to worry about his next move, as of yet.
