Recently, the Watchmen TV adaption for HBO seemed to be in pre-production, but now it is official. They have officially handed out a pilot order for the show. The show will be helmed by (Lost and Leftovers) Damon Lindelof. The series was announced 3 months ago, and is now being confirmed.
Lindelof posted a photo on his Instagram account recently that sparked attention. He put “Day One.” as the caption, read more here. HBO also commissioned for additional scripts for the Watchmen TV adaption. Hopefully we get about 8-10 episodes for the first season.
Lindelof read these comics as a child, and says that they continue to influence his work. You can see it in the movies he writes and produces. He told Comicbook Resources in 2009, “From the flashbacks to the nonlinear storytelling to the deeply flawed heroes, these are all elements that I try to put into everything I write.”
In 2009, Watchmen’s big screen adaption was released. The film was directed by Zack Snyder, and it also received praise from Lindelof. The film was truly amazing. Lindelof told the Observer, “It’s the most married-to-the-original-text version of Watchmen that could’ve been made.” The first rumors of the television show started in 2015, and Zack Snyder was attached to the HBO adaption for a brief moment. Lindelof will now take that role, and begin the process. He’s apparently dreamed of this for years, and it’s happening.
Watchmen will add on to the growing list of Comicbook TV shows. They are everywhere on television, and it’s lovely. Arrow, Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Gotham, The Gifted, Legion, New Warriors, The Walking Dead, Preacher, etc. This will only add fuel to the fire, and hopefully more premium cable channels pick up Comicbook TV shows.
