ESRB Says Buying Loot Boxes Is Not Gambling

Loot Boxes are becoming more and more famous in video games today that is has sparked conversation on whether or not the ESRB should label games for having gambling on the games rating on the back of the box. Well look like the ESRB has an answer for that in an email to Kotaku.

“ESRB does not consider loot boxes to be gambling, While there’s an element of chance in these mechanics, the player is always guaranteed to receive in-game content (even if the player unfortunately receives something they don’t want). We think of it as a similar principle to collectible card games: Sometimes you’ll open a pack and get a brand new holographic card you’ve had your eye on for a while. But other times you’ll end up with a pack of cards you already have.”

It seems that the ESRB had already took into consideration Loot Boxes and had their answer already made. The ESRB is an organization in North America that gives video games their ratings and descriptions on the back of boxes so retailers know whether or not to sell a game in their stores.
