Last season in ARROW, we got to see the introduction of a new addition to Team Arrow in the form of Wild Dog. Wild Dog’s story was changed drastically from his comic counterpart, firstly by the name change of Rene Ramirez and his movitation of becoming a viligante was the death of his girlfriend instead. One thing that did not change drastically however, was Wild Dog’s suit which has been hailed by many Arrow fans as one of the most comic book accurate suits on the show, which I would definitely have to agree with, it has the perfect blend of realism but with the look ripped from the comics, the Season 5 suit for the character was highly praised by an large majority of fans.
However as Arrow enters its sixth season, his costume has had an drastic change to fit more with the realistic tone of the show, with the suit taking a huge change from the comic counterparts suit sadly. Many fans including myself, were very unsure about this new suit when it appeared in the premiere, and apparently we are not the only ones who believe this.
It seems that Terry Beatty who co-created the character of Wild Dog back in 1987 as well as designing the original costume was very displeased with the costume change done in the show, he took to Facebook to voice his concerns and said the following:
“THIS, ladies and gentlemen is what the powers that be at the ARROW TV show have decided is Wild Dog’s new “improved” look. Yup — THIS is Wild Dog. Since the costume and name were all that survived from the comic book to begin with, this is now literally Wild Dog in name only. This change erases any trace of the original Collins/Beatty concept for the character. I would not be surprised if his name gets changed before too long, as well.
Whatever was unique about his “street level” costume has been replaced with the current standard issue dark armored uniform — a generic “third Imperial Guard from the left/Death-Blood-Stroke-Stryke/Image big gun” look. Sigh….
Oh well, I got a year’s worth of seeing how cool my costume design looked on screen — a validation of my work in a lot of ways. I suppose it was too much to expect it would last.
I will tip my hat to Rick Gonzalez, who I feel has done a fine job in the role and has a strong screen presence. I wish him luck in going forward with this and whatever else he does down the line.”
It seems that he is very upset that his character design has been changed – which is perfectly understandable due to this being a character that he helped create, however he did praise Rick Gonzalez for his performance as Wild Dog so it seems there is no ill will intended to him and to the rest of the cast.
Let us know your thoughts! Was it smart to change Wild Dog’s costume? And is Terry Beatty fair in what he said regarding the new suit for the character?
Arrow continues this week with the episode titled “TRIBUTE” and will air this Thursday at 9/8c on The CW.
