Justice League is only a couple weeks away, and one of the many topics of discussion surrounding it is Superman. The actor, Henry Cavill, has opened up in a recent interview about how Clark Kent will return and wether or not he will don the black suit, as well as other things surrounding the movie like the tone and reshoots.
Henry Cavill was asked how the tone of Justice League compares to Batman v Superman.
“The tone of this film is… I’m not gonna say it is light because that would be doing it an injustice. It is… It has a serious scenario with moments of humor and lightness peppered throughout, which as much as people say it isn’t close to reality and as much as this does have senses of very much not being like reality… when people are in bad situations gallows humor does come into effect. I know a lot of guys in the Armed Forces, and a lot of them have really bizarre sense of humor, and it gets you through, and we have those in this movie.”
I actually really like this as a tone for the movie. I was worried it would be too humorous and not take itself seriously enough, but Cavill is right. People are humorous even in serious moments to help get through it, and I think we’ll see that a lot with The Flash, who is being exposed to this world for the first time.
Henry Cavill notoriously returned for Justice League reshoots with a full grown moutsache which could not be shaven due to conflicts with another film, so the studio was forced to digitally remove the stache. He was asked how many scenes he shot with his moustache in the film.
“I can’t really talk about that”
There is a lot of controversy surrounding the amount of reshoots done on the film, so Cavill probably steered away from this question to avoid any disputes. He could, however, comment on the process of wearing the suit with the moutsache.
“When I looked in the mirror I also have my moustache waxed up to try and keep it off my lips as much as possible and I had dots all over my face. That was definitely a funny-looking Superman.”
I really hope we get some behind the scenes footage of that because it sounds hilarious.
Last summer, Henry Cavill posted this image on Instagram, which seemingly confirmed the famous black suit for Justice League:
Other than this image, though, we haven’t really gotten any other hints that Superman will suit up with a darker costume. Cavill was asked about the post and if it really is the black suit.
Can you talk about this image you posted on Instagram last Summer?
“I can talk about that’
This is what appears to be a black suit. What’s going on?
“That’s exactly how it appears”
Is that what it is?
“I mean, it appears to be a black suit, right?”
It appears to be, but it could just be a monochromatic photo or something like that.
“You know what? It could be. I don’t know.”
So, he’s obviously very dodgy of the question, but, to me, this pretty much confirms the use of the black suit in the film.
Superman’s return in the film would be easy to explain, but the return of Clark Kent, who was just a normal guy that seemingly died during the events of Batman v Superman, would be harder to explain. Cavill was asked how they would explain that to the world and what direction they would take with the character.
“Have you read the Rebirth comics? Rebirth comics, it’s a very different style of Clark Kent and Superman. He actually has a son as well with Lois and they live in a different place. It’s a very different lifestyle and relationship going on there so there’s an opportunity there for that, but there’s so many different other opportunities as well where we can express and play with what and who Clark is.”
So we may not even get an official Clark Kent return to the world. He may not be a reporter for the Weekly Planet anymore which is something that has been a staple in all Superman movies. Personally, I would be fine with this different direction for Clark. They haven’t done a very good job of distinguishing the difference between Clark and Superman in these movies so far, so a complete departure from that would be fine by me.
You can see Superman return to the big screen on November 17th.
