‘Pokemon GO’ Developer Niantic to Release ‘Harry Potter’ AR Mobile Game in 2018

Get ready to watch hordes of people march blindly through your neighborhood again. Niantic, developers of mobile augmented reality games such as Ingress and Pokemon GO have announced their next game. Harry Potter: Wizards Unite will follow a similar formula to these other mobile games. The official announcement describes the gameplay as allowing players to “learn spells, explore their real world neighborhoods and cities to discover & fight legendary beasts and team up with others to take down powerful enemies.”

I can already imagine the lines being drawn and allegiances being shouted in public for one of the four houses. The part about fighting monsters obviously sounds very familiar. And I would think the powerful enemies would be like Pokemon GO‘s raids. It’ll be interesting to see how spells play into the game. Do you visit landmarks that offer lessons on certain spells? Or do you tomes pop up out of nowhere like wild Pokemon? The most important question of course is how long will this game stay in the mainstream consciousness? Pokemon GO deflated pretty quickly, but hopefully Niantic can offer more content and more hardcore gameplay to keep people coming back.
