Shadow of the Colossus was the 2005 PlayStation 2 epic action adventure title that sought to redefine what a good gaming experience was. The game gave exposure to a new way to tell a virtual story and a new type of presentation for a genre of gaming that had become lamented with titles that simply threw nameless enemies in the player’s direction to be easily dispatched without thought or consequence. With an open backdrop silhouetting sixteen massive creatures and nearly nothing else Shadow of the Colossus won critical praise for its ability to engage the player with a style that had never been seen before, and really has never been seen since. The 2018 remake seeks to do just that again.

Remakes are usually all about new graphics and maybe some new hidden secrets to seek out during a playthrough of a prettier version of a game you know too much about. Shadow of the Colossus PS4 seeks to break the mold once again by building the world anew and giving the player another experience like nothing you have felt in the past. The entire remake is built from the ground up again so nothing feels like the gaming equivalent of leftover pizza reheated in the microwave.

The PS4 remake of Shadow of the Colossus is, in a word, gorgeous. The entire game is built to encapsulate a sense of scale and to make these Colossi seem grandiose above the head of Wander, the player character, and the technology of the PS4 pro provides the tools necessary to show the player the size of exactly what you will be up against as you approach and attempt to topple these enormous beasts.

Shadow of the Colossus PS4 will be releasing next year amongst a slew of other long awaited titles, but don’t be surprised if this game not only holds it’s own in sales, but in awards as well.
