Lets a go everybody! Nintendo is reportedly in talks with Illumination studios, the production company behind Minions and Despicable Me, to develop a Super Mario Bros. animated movie.
According to The Wall Street Journal Illumination has been in talks with Nintendo for nearly a year, with the major sticking point be that Nintendo is heavily involved in the creative process. If they deal does happen and the movie goes into development Mario creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, will reportedly serve as a producer. This news comes after Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima said last year that the company was in talks with several Hollywood companies to bring Mario to the big screen.
While this is not yet official the news does fit with Nintendo’s recent step towards expanding beyond the bounds of video games. With recent moves to clothing lines, mobile games, and theme parks it seems Nintendo has no limits.
So while it is far too early to tell if the deal will go through hopefully the studio can hep Mario to avoid the curse of movies adapted from video games. Which given Illumination’s success with its past films were hopeful they will be able to create a movie worthy of everyone’s favorite plumber. – Jacob Campbell
