James Franco has confirmed reports he’s developing his own X-Men movie, and he hopes it will break new ground.

After recent reports of a Multiple Man movie starring James Franco, the ‘Disaster Artist‘ star and director confirmed he’s working with Fox and producer Simon Kinberg on the project.

“I do have a superhero that I am developing. I don’t know how much I can say. But I will say I am producing and performing in it. It’s early stages. I think probably what I can say is, like anything, there’s a need to develop more.”

The film will be developed by Ramona Films, Franco’s own company he started with his brother Dave Franco, where they are currently developing “all kinds of movies”. He also mentioned the recent direction solo X-Men films have taken, with Logan and Deadpool each leaning into other genres and utilizing a hard-R rating.

“Our bottom line MO is, how can we push this into new ground? A little bit, but still make it entertaining? [But] what I love about what Simon Kinberg and Fox and the X-Men people have done with Deadpool and Logan — it took a while to get there, maybe 10 years — but they are going to go hard R. And we’re going to take this superhero thing and really just push it into a new genre. So we’re working with Simon Kinberg on an X-Men property.”

It doesn’t confirm an R rating (like Franco emphasized, the project still needs development), but it does mean they’re looking more to the R-rated Deadpool and Logan for inspiration. And with Franco also producing, that seems like a large possibility.

Madrox

For the unfamiliar, Jamie Madrox, aka the Multiple Man, is a mutant with the power to create duplicates of himself that he can then absorb back into his body. First created in 1975, the character has had a strong role in X-Factor, including leading the team in a lengthy run that lasted until 2013. The character also appeared in X-Men: The Last Stand, but no one cares about that.
