Iris West actor Kiersey Clemons was set to debut in the recently released Justice League before her role was cut from the film following extensive reshoots. Her not appearing in the film sparked conversations about whether the actress would “reprise” her role in Flashpoint, the film she was originally cast in. We may now have confirmation that Clemons will not be portraying Iris West when the Flash solo film hits theaters.
According to Discussing Film, Clemons has no plans to return to the DCEU, as she has no contractual obligation. They go on to say that Warner Brothers is keeping the door open for her if she decides to return.
Kiersey Clemons’ breakout role was in the 2015 hit Dope, which was directed by Rick Famiyuwa. When the director signed on to take on the Flash solo movie he brought Clemons along to play Barry Allen’s iconic love interest, Iris West.
Famiyuwa went on to leave the project following creative differences with Warner Brothers. Clemons was still attached to the role as she was set to have a small cameo in Justice League. She was a vocal proponent of the film and was excited to bring the character to life until the controversial reshoots.
Joss Whedon took over directing duties after Zack Snyder stepped away following the death of his daughter. Reshoots began with only a portion of the film completed and much of the story changed. Including the removal of a lot of background story for the newer characters. That list included Barry Allen which led to Iris West being cut from the film.
Recently, deleted scenes from the Justice League found their way online, which included Barry Allen saving Iris which was an extended version of the glass breaking scene in on of the trailers for the film. That may not sound like much but a VFX artist who worked on the movie took to Reddit to discuss that specific scene. Here is what they said:
“The cut scene of Flash breaking through the glass is from a scene where he’s rushing to save Iris from a Car Crash with a hot dog van. It was cut fairly early on when Famuyiwa bailed on Flash as Kiersey Clemons was cast due to his involvement. It’s currently being worked on again to remove Clemons and replace her with a random woman for the home release. Whether that means an extended version or just for deleted scenes, I don’t know. I expect Clemons will be recast.”
