Thor: Ragnarok had it’s main character stripped of his hammer and most importantly, his hair. It also added a fan favorite character to the mix with Valkyrie. New concept art with early designs for the film showcase very different looks for the two characters.

Marvel Studios Concept Artist Andy Park shared multiple images featuring the concept art he made for the film for the characters.  First one up is a different design for Thor’s gladiator armor for when he fights in the arena. Another version of the art includes Thor’s classic helmet. Check them out below.

His inspiration for those types of looks for Thor is Odin’s armor from the Thor: God of Thunder series. I personally think they look pretty great, but the final look is more appropriate for the vibrant colors present in the film. He also sports even shorter hair here, nearly completely shaven. Quite different from the fresh cut we got on the big screen.

Next one up is Valkyrie, which includes a different design for her costume in the Valkyries of Asgard sequence from the movie.

This alternate design looks quite spectacular and very functional in terms of the amount of armor. It would have been pretty excited to see her sport that neat looking staff, something that seems like the rest of the Valkyries have equipped as well.

It seems like both designs were fairly early on, as they look less influenced by director Taika Waititi. What we got in the final product was great, but it’s interesting to know that it could’ve been a lot different. From the looks of it, these early designs were based on a darker, more serous version of Ragnarok.
