With just two episodes of the fifth season released, the most recent storyline of ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ is already being praised as some of Marvel Television’s best work with the unpredictable plot and out-of-this-world special effects. Coulson and the gang are trapped in space and it looks like it will take the entire team performing at their very best for the entirety of this season to accomplish that impossible feat.
Along with this next-level type of storytelling, the show which lead the way for all of Marvel’s TV projects will be celebrating a major milestone this season; The 100th episode.
Jeph Loeb, the mastermind with his hands in all of Marvel’s intellectual property on TV, had this to say regarding the upcoming monumental occasion during this year’s NYCC:
“Look, this is not going to come as a surprise to anyone that’s ever seen a 100th episode, that there will be a significant event. That’s all I can tell you. They gotta get home from space!”
While, at the time, both Loeb and Ming-Na Wen, who plays Agent Melinda May on the series, both claimed they did not know what would be happening during the events of the 100th episode, they did get a little camera shy when asked about this season’s tie-in to the MCU’s major film release.
In the past, ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ has connected to The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avenger: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, and Captain America: Civil War in significant ways, ways that have been extremely consequential to the show’s ongoing story. It would make sense that this season would feature lead-up and/or fallout from the biggest film in Marvel history, Avengers: Infinity War.
It is well-known that Avengers: Infinity War will feature some surprise cameos from Marvel characters from the 10 year history of the franchise and it is still canon that not only was Agent Coulson’s death during the events of The Avengers, but he was also the reason The Avengers were able to finally discover and retrieve Loki’s scepter in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Will Coulson finally be reunited with his good friends Tony Stark and Pepper Potts and his hero Steve Rogers. Will his team discover and come back from space with information to help fight the fight for the universe against Thanos and his Children?
Only time will tell.
