2019 just became a 90s baby’s wet dream. Are You Afraid of the Dark? has just been given a release date for October 11, 2019 as a big screen adaption. The show originally aired from October 31, 1990 to June 11, 2000 on SNICK (Saturday Night for Nickolodeon).
Are You Afraid of the Dark? was a tv show about a group of kids named the “Midnight Society.” The show was an anthology series, where they would sit around a campfire and tell scary stories. Some of the cast included Ryan Gosling, Tatyana Ali, and Hayden Christensen. This was groundbreaking for a channel like Nickolodeon. No other channels geared towards kids really had shows like this at the time. The show was really geared towards preteens and teens which is why it was given a slot on SNICK. The shows included Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Animorphs, All That, Ren and Stimpy, and many many more. Any kid born in the late 80s or early 90s will definitely remember this, and hopefully shares my excitement for Are You Afraid of the Dark?.
The film is in good hands, as it is being written and Produced by IT writer Gary Dauberman. In a statement Dauberman said:
“The show is about the shared experience of telling stories — especially scary ones. We’re going to celebrate that with this movie and honor the darker, scarier tone of the show, which was really groundbreaking for Nickelodeon at the time. I hope the Midnight Society approves.”
As I said this film is in good hands. Dauberman wrote IT, Annabelle, and Annabelle: Creation. He’s also uncredited with rewrites on Final Destination 5 and A Nightmare on Elm Street. He’s truly a man of horror who will hopefully give the Midnight Society the treatment they deserve!
What do you guys think? Are you excited for this film? Will you be at the movies on October 11th? Let us know how you feel! Leave a comment, tweet us, share the article, thank you guys!
