According To Rian Johnson, Rey’s True Parentage Is ‘Still Open’

**Warning The Following Post Contains Spoilers For Star Wars: The Last Jedi**

It was just announced that Star Wars: The Last Jedi had crossed the $1 billion mark, making it the highest grossing film of 2017. And while it is no doubt the movie was a financial success, the question of how well it was received by some fans is still up for debate. It seems that The Last Jedi may be the most divisive Star Wars film to date, with many fans angered by how the story treated classic characters and the wider Star Wars universe.

One of the main issues dividing fans is how the question of Rey’s parentage was treated by director Rian Johnson. Many theories prior to the film’s release believed that Rey was descended from a number of many classic Star Wars characters from Obi Wan to Emperor Palpatine. But in a shocking scene between Kylo Ren and Rey the former revealed to the latter that her parents were effectively nobodies, they were just junkers from Jakku who traded their daughter for a way off the planet. But this answer has fueled many a fan to question, was Kylo lying?

And it seems the answer to this may be more open than we thought because according to Rian Johnson the answer is up to J.J. Abrams and Chris Terrio. In an interview with the Huffington Post Johnson told them,

“Anything’s still open, and I’m not writing the next film [Abrams and Terrio] are doing it.”

And while Johnson has said Kylo was sincere in his remarks he acknowledged that the truth is always a little more complex in Star Wars.

“With all of these movies, Obi-Wan’s whole speech about a certain point of view always applies, so I think that you have to always think about the context of how information is given. But for me, dramatically, that’s why that reveal at that moment made sense.”

So it seems we will have to wait for Episode IX to really know the truth of Rey’s parentage and if Kylo was lying to her.

Do you think Kylo was being sincere? Or is the question of Rey’s parentage still open?  Let us know at SuperBroMovies on Twitter what you think! – Jacob Campbell
