The Last Jedi has been rocking theaters for close to a month now. The pressure from the cast, crew, and studio to keep as little as possible secret is almost completely relieved. I say almost because there are always a few behind the scene details that never get full explanation or even reach outside ears. This is common with almost every film, regardless how big or small. Recently, actor Mark Hamill has been gathering some attention around himself and the production behind The Last Jedi. Words either taken too far or out of context created absurd fan theories that Hamill had a miserable time working on the film. He has since denounced all of these theories numerous times on social media, but he cannot stop letting precious information slip to the press. Digital Spy have cited an interview between Hamill and the foreign cite Mtime in which the original ending to The Force Awakens was discussed. The details may not be so extreme this time around, but they still offer us a description of what could have been.
Hamill has teased before that the ending to TFA was changed because of potential contradictions to TLJ. He obviously could not give much detail before, but he now speaks freely with the pressure coming from the latest film almost being completely lifted.
“When we were doing (The Force Awakens), Rian said, ‘We might have boulders floating to show your Force emanating’, so I was led to believe that I still had the Force and it was really strong in me,”
It is public knowledge that directors Rian Johnson and J.J Abrams worked closely together on the scenes and island set that linked their films. Rey’s first look of the mythic Luke Skywalker including huge boulders floating around him would have made for a grand image. If you’ve seen the recent film, then you know that Rey discovers that Luke has disconnected himself from the force. This also explains why Luke had no idea about Han’s death when he knew exactly when his friends were in trouble across the galaxy in Empire. Hamill continues to explain what his reaction was going into the next film.
“When I read (The Last Jedi) before (The Force Awakens) came out, I said ‘what?!” and called JJ or Rian to say, ‘Are you guys aware of this? Have you seen a cut? Is there floating boulders?’
He got a response from both saying that they caught the detail and “worked it all out”. Hamill went from thinking that Luke was still powerful in the force to finding out that he has since abandoned it. This journey has since been emotional for Hamill and you can truly see this in his gravitas on screen. How much more Hamill will reveal from his now past and future work on this trilogy is still to be seen.
