Tom King recently tweeted a piece of a page from DC’s Crisis on Infinite Earths and as King often uses Twitter to tease upcoming projects, this photo may mean something for the future.
SPOILERS for Doomsday Clock below.
King’s tweet is shown below:
The panels depict Barry Allen, the Flash, coming to Batman for help.
Could King be teasing a new Crisis event? The most recent Crisis event was Grant Morrison’s Final Crisis in 2008. Announcing a new Crisis event at this moment would likely not be a great choice because we are barely into Geoff Johns and Gary Frank’s Doomsday Clock (2/12 issues have hit shelves so far). Revealing an upcoming event before another finishes can diminish the stakes of the current event.
Geoff John’s DC Universe: Rebirth #1 one-shot featured Wally West as Kid Flash (Barry Allen’s protégé) appearing in front of Batman, asking for his help (sound familiar?):
Then, in The Button, a 4-part Batman/The Flash crossover, Batman and the Flash see old moments through the Speed Force:
The page’s intertextuality is a reference to Justice League of America #9 (1962), Identity Crisis #6 (2004), and Crisis on Infinite Earths #2 (1985), respectively. The Crisis on Infinite Earths reference is the same that King tweeted. King was also a writer of this crossover, alongside Joshua Williamson.
King may be planning to further what was touched upon in The Button in his current Batman run or he may be planning something new with DC. It is possible this may relate in some way to Doomsday Clock as well, seeing as it takes place 1 year after the current DC timeline. By that time, Bruce Wayne will do something as Batman to anger the citizens (likely in King’s run), as it is referenced in Doomsday Clock #2:
King’s reference to a Crisis not “coming” but being “here” may be related to the importance of time in Doomsday Clock (and that little thing called Watchmen too) or a reference to Doomsday Clock being a new crisis. New stories often spin off of events (see DC’s Dark Matter coming from Dark Knights: METAL); King may be teasing a new event coming out of Doomsday Clock‘s fallout.
For example, because Dr. Manhattan appears to be toying with the DCU, having taken years from the characters, the return to previous continuity may come out of Doomsday Clock and because of that, we may see the Crisis on Infinite Earths moment canon. With that may come a new avenue for King to explore a new threat to the DCU or a new story involving Batman and the Flash.
King may be planning something for his current Batman run or may have something new in mind entirely. A new Crisis event could be interesting for sure. Nothing is yet confirmed so we will have to wait and see. What do you think? Tweet us @SBComicCorner!
