Brandon Routh (Ray Palmer) recently sat down with comicbook.com for an interview and discussed Wally West (played by Keynan Lionsdale) joining the Legends of Tomorrow lineup. SPOILERS for Legends of Tomorrow follow.

Comicbook.com asked Routh about his opinion on Wally West (a black character) seemingly replacing the previous black character of Firestorm/Jax (played by Franz Drameh). Routh discussed how the creative team for the series are well aware of the trope in fiction (particularly comicbooks and television) where one member of a demographic is killed off to “make room” for another. Routh discussed how these characters are more than their race, gender, religion, etc. and mentioned Lionsdale’s energy in his role of Wally West:

Yeah. You know, I think that goes with the talent that Keiynan brings to his role and to this newly-forming — is it forming? — energy of him coming in to be a part of our show for a little bit. I think for the most part, our writers are writing for us as a team and putting the team first, and if we can make poignant stories about cultural differences or religious differences, then we do, but if we can’t, then we are all working together on the team to solve history, which is I feel like a place that we can get to in the world, where we can understand that we all have differences but we can all talk person to person, human to human.

Mark Pedowitz, the network president for the CW, had said that Wally West will be joining the Legends of Tomorrow team, but it is unknown whether Lionsdale will be guest-appearing for a bit or joining as a series regular.

Legends of Tomorrow– “Arrow” and “The Flash” have some new superhero company in the CW’s lineup with the addition of “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.” After seeing what doom the future holds, time-traveling rogue Rip Hunter realizes heroes alone are not enough to prevent the impending catastrophe that threatens not only the planet, but all of time itself. Tasked with recruiting both heroes and villains, Rip brings together a ragtag team of divergent talents, which includes the likes of Sara Lance, Ray Palmer, and Heat Wave.

Legends of Tomorrow returns to the CW on February 12, 2018
