Pikachu is without a doubt the most iconic Pokemon from the entire series. Almost every child and adult knows who Pikachu is. The character has certainly beat the test of time for the past few decades thanks to his travels across pop culture. Get ready for Pikachu to continue his streak in being a household name for the next generation. How can the character achieve this accomplishment for more years to come you may ask? Two words- Detective Pikachu.

Has this already caught your wallet’s interest? If so then live-action Detective Pikachu film starring Ryan Reynolds should take your money without hesitation. Legendary/Universal announced today that the first live-action Pokemon film has officially begun filming. Rumors have surfaced over the past few months about who was in charge of writing and voicing the world’s top favorite pokemon. Thanks to the official press release, we know have the facts straight.

Great-Detective-Pikachu

Ken Watanabe was rumored to voice Pikachu and Gravity Falls writer Alex Hirsch was rumored to be working on the script. Riding off the success of Deadpool, it turns out that Ryan Reynolds will be the star by providing his snarky voice as Pikachu. Goosebumps director Rob Letterman will be helming the project. Letterman and Nicole Perlman will be receiving credit for the final screenplay draft. Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will recognize Perlman’s name from her screenwriting credit on Guardians of the Galaxy. Fresh off The Get Down, Justin Smith will star as the pokemon’s human partner. Kathryn Newton of Big Little Lies will complete the trio. We do not know what her role is exactly yet, but it would not be surprising if she were to be a fellow detective or leading officer in their precinct.

It may be too early to say this, but this might just be the perfect team to bring this film into theaters. Pikachu solving crime while also throwing GotG level jokes in a snarky voice may be what we just need in the world right now. What the big question is how Pikachu’s animation will look like on screen? Will he have a balance of a realism like Paddington does in his films? Will they go for a more traditional cartoon look but just combined with the human world? If you are interested in what a Detective Pikachu story might be like, you have plenty of stories to dive into from the Nintendo games! This might just be the surprise hit that you did not think you needed. No one thought the Paddington films would turn out to be some of the best family films that cinema currently has to offer. Never doubt a story just because it features a far-fetched talking cgi animal.
