Steven Spielberg is one of the biggest names in Hollywood that just does not know when to slow down. We should all be very grateful for his passion and drive for the last decade has provided us with a handful of soon to be Spielberg classics. His saga of historical epics (Lincoln, Bridge of Spies) added another Oscar nominated installment with The Post this year. 2018 is also not over for him yet, as his pop culture epic Ready Player One is set to release in March.
One would think that Spielberg would want to take a year break to relax and plan ahead, but time is of the essence and why stop when you are on a roll? According to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, the next few years are going to quite packed for the four time Oscar Winning director.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull turns ten this year, so this could not be the more perfect time to announce the follow up to the mixed received sequel. THR reports that Spielberg has two huge films up next on his agenda. The first in line being Indy 5 and the second being a film remake of the Broadway classic West Side Story. Fans that have been following the director for some time now know that this particular musical is one of his top passion projects. The report also includes the fact that the casting process officially began this week. If that does not prove his dedication to someone then who knows what will. Spielberg is working with long time collaborator Kristie Macosko Krieger and big time Broadway producer Kevin McCollum. Casting notices were sent out on Wednesday for Latino actors who must be fluent in Spanish. The goal is to find the right people for the Latin roles that the musical demands.
Considering how crucial representation for people of color is in film today, Spielberg’s search for the right stars is necessary. Apparently this search and journey to his WSS’s pre-production is going to be long enough for him to complete an entire Indiana Jones film in the meantime. This may give some the idea that he is not as passionate about doing another Indy film. This is a fair initial concern, but this is not the case for Spielberg simply does not just direct films out of obligation. The Post began principal photography just last May and was released in time to get well deserved award nominations. Ready Player One filmed in 2016 and has been in post production ever since due to the amount of special effects needed. It is safe to say that Spielberg knows how to manage his time for the right projects.
Indiana Jones should begin filming next year for a 2020 release date. This has been the rumored plan for a while, but fans should rest easy reading the news in a reliable report. Crystal Skull scribe and long time Spielberg collaborator David Koepp has been at work on the script for some time now. Just last September he gave some insight on the current state of the script to Entertainment Weekly.
I know we’ve got a script we’re mostly happy with. Work will be endless, of course, and ongoing, and Steven just finished shooting The Post …. If the stars align, hopefully it’ll be his next film.
Months later now and Koepp’s words are actually turning out to be true. The script is almost ready to go and this time unlike Skull– everyone seems to be on the same page. He revealed that Shia Labeouf’s character would not be returning, but a lot of people already saw that news coming. Coming off the wheels of The Force Awakens and Blade Runner 2049, seeing Harrison Ford as Indy another time would complete the trifecta. Who would say no to seeing Harrison Ford on screen at any time? The official Indy announcement from Lucasfilm should come later in the year. Hold on to your fedoras for 2020 is right around the corner.
