While the mystery of the third Cloverfield movie is still being unraveled, the fourth entry has already been completed behind our backs.
The sci-fi anthology franchise characterized by cryptic releases and real-world surprises has done it again. After the 2007 original released a trailer before it had a title or anyone had even heard of it, its mystery sparked online frenzy. The second entry, 10 Cloverfield Lane, followed suit with a trailer in theaters before anyone knew the franchise was continuing with new anthology installments. A third entry, currently under the working title ‘God Particle‘, and possibly titled ‘Cloverfield Station‘, is due sometime this year, possibly on Netlfix. Now we have the first news on the fourth, once again hidden in plain sight.
It’s currently titled ‘Overlord‘ and it takes place in World War II. It’s directed by Julius Avery (Son of a Gun) and stars Wyatt Russell (22 Jump Street) and Jovan Adepo (Fences). We have a first synopsis as well:
On the eve of D-Day, American paratroopers are dropped behind enemy lines to carry out a mission crucial to the invasion’s success. But as they approach their target, they begin to realize there is more going on in this Nazi-occupied village than a simple military operation. They find themselves fighting against supernatural forces, part of a Nazi experiment.
That sounds pretty darn interesting, if I do say so myself. Like the previous three entries in the franchise, Overlord is being made by Paramount and produced by J.J. Abrams under his company Bad Robot. The script likely began as an independent project developed by Bad Robot and was brought into the Cloverfield franchise because it fits the tense, mysterious sci-fi mold that the name signifies. The movie’s existence itself hasn’t been a secret, but its status as a Cloverfield movie has just been uncovered with news of filming wrapping.
Overlord actually has a current release date of October 26, 2018. With the third entry also releasing this year after several long delays, it’s possible it will get moved back. Or maybe Cloverfield Station/God Particle will hit Netflix in the spring while Overlord/Cloverfield 4 is in theaters for the Halloween crowd.
