‘AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR’ Super Bowl Trailer Breakdown

Super Bowl LII brought us loads of trailers for upcoming movies like Solo, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and Cloverfield Paradox, but the highlight of the night was definitely the spot for Avengers: Infinity War. It was a short one at 30 seconds, and it didn’t reveal too much new information about the plot, but it did give us loads of new shots that we can speculate on here. Let’s get right into it.

The first shot of the trailer gives us a glorious look at three of the biggest stars in the movie.

Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Doctor Strange look like they could be spending a lot of their time together throughout the movie. This shot probably comes from the middle or later in the film because Peter has his Iron Spider suit. It’s hard to tell where this location is, but it’s probably not on Earth.

The next shot shows us Scarlet Witch and Vision.

Screen Shot 2018-02-04 at 11.13.14 PM.png

This is probably from a dream sequence, like we saw in the first trailer, but Scarlet Witch is doing something with Vision’s Mind Stone here. We saw her connect with the Mind Stone in Age of Ultron and Civil War showed us that she can overpower Vision. Perhaps she’s trying to take it out or access his thoughts.

“So this is it. It’s all been leading to this.”

In a conversation with Bruce Banner, Tony quite literally describes the role of the movies leading up to Infinity War. I imagine this is shortly after Bruce Banner is found by Doctor Strange, and he tells the team what happened in his encounter with Thanos, which we saw the beginning of in the post credit scene of Thor Ragnarök.

Screen Shot 2018-02-04 at 11.25.31 PM.png

This is probably aboard Thanos’ ship after the events of the Ragnarök post credit scene. We saw a shot of Loki holding up the Tesseract in the previous trailer in a similar location.

We then get arguably the most memorable moment from the trailer. Spider-Man hanging on the edge of a ship flying into space.

This likely takes place towards the beginning of the film. Spider-Man has on his suit from Homecoming, so this is probably before his first encounter with Tony. We also saw from the first trailer that Spider-Man is one of the first responders to Thanos’ initial invasion. Peter will likely be saved by Tony in this moment which is when he could be given the Iron Spider suit.

Here we see Cap, Black Widow, Vision, and what looks to be Scarlet Witch behind Cap.

It looks like they’re arriving at the Avengers headquarters, so I bet this is after Tony finally gives Cap the call to rejoin him. The biggest takeaway from this shot, though, is that Vision doesn’t have the Mind Stone in his forehead. This could be after he is apprehended by Thanos’ Black Order like we saw in the first trailer. Many have expected Vision to die once his stone is removed, but that doesn’t appear to be the case. It’ll be interesting to see how he functions without it. He also looks to be in pain which isn’t something we’ve seen from him before.

We get a couple quick shots of the Guardians throughout the trailer

Screen Shot 2018-02-05 at 9.24.14 AM.png

This scene probably has Nebula facing off against her father, Thanos, which should be a rather emotional moment in the film.

Screen Shot 2018-02-04 at 11.21.52 PM.png

Groot is seen here playing what looks to be the same video console as he was in the post credits of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. I really like how they’re going with the whole teenage angst phase of Groot’s life. From the looks of it, The Guardians will be spending most of their time with Thor.

Thor looks up at presumably the Guardians and asks if they’re ready.

Screen Shot 2018-02-04 at 11.37.49 PM.png

From several leaks, we’ve heard that Thor will be constructing a new weapon with the Guardians in order to prepare himself for his fight with Thanos. SuperBroMovies was the first to report this, and we also revealed that Groot will be offering one of his arms as a handle for Thor’s new weapon. This scene is likely when Thor constructs his new hammer, and it probably coincides with this shot we saw in the last trailer.

Screen Shot 2018-02-05 at 9.42.55 AM.png

Tony takes off his glasses as his suit forms around him. It looks like the same nano technology in Black Panther’s suit that we’ve seen from the trailers. This is probably why he has a device on his chest throughout the movie. I have a feeling this shot could be the same moment as this shot from the last trailer.

Screen Shot 2018-02-05 at 9.48.45 AM.png

Here’s a Doctor Strange and Iron Man team up shot from likely the same scene.

Screen Shot 2018-02-05 at 9.49.40 AM.png

Iron Man breaks through Doctor Strange’s spell so he obviously hasn’t gotten used to Strange’s powers.

We then see Cap with one of his new shields.

Screen Shot 2018-02-04 at 11.44.53 PM.png

The shield uses Wakandan tech in the way it changes form. It was probably designed by T’Challa’s sister, Shuri, who is a bit of a tech genius (some would say more so than Tony Stark). Cap says, “Let’s go,” to T’Challa, so this is likely before the big battle of Wakanda, which we see a lot of.

Screen Shot 2018-02-05 at 9.38.31 AM.png

Screen Shot 2018-02-05 at 9.38.53 AM.png

Bucky can be seen with his new arm that he presumably gets from Wakanda. This arm has a gold tint, and it doesn’t have the red star that Hydra marked him with.

And then we get with the same “money shot” from the last trailer.

Screen Shot 2018-02-05 at 9.39.36 AM.png

Captain America’s shields have been edited here to appear larger in this shot than they were in the last trailer.

The trailer ends with a quick shot of Thanos, the only one we get in the whole spot.

Screen Shot 2018-02-05 at 9.52.26 AM.png

It’s hard to tell where this is, but if I were to guess, I would say it’s during the same scene when he takes over Thor’s ship and Loki offer’s him the Tesseract.

Overall, this was another great trailer. It didn’t get me as hyped as the last trailer, but considering it was only 30 seconds, we got a lot of new stuff to look at. I’m glad they didn’t reveal too much, though, because I’m looking forward to a lot of surprises in the theatre.
