The new Avengers: Infinity War TV spot just dropped and featured some new shots and moments from the upcoming movie, including Spider-Man (Tom Holland) climbing an alien structure and tearing his mask off. I have a theory as to where the scene will be heading. Potential SPOILERS for Avengers: Infinity War follow.
You can check the TV spot out below:
In the early 2000s, J. Michael Straczynski was the writer for Amazing Spider-Man. In that run (issues 519-524), he wrote an arc in which Spider-Man took on Hydra, foiling their plans to fire a toxic missile into the Ogallala Aquifer, an underground reservoir that supplied water to several states.
Spider-Man thwarted the villains by grabbing onto the missile and breaking it from inside. He tears off his mask and has a difficult time straining to destroy the internal workings of the missile. He eventually gets it and falls towards the ocean as the missile explodes above him.
He says goodby to his wife MJ and Aunt May as he thinks this is the end.
But at the last moment, Iron Man flies in and saves him.
In the new Super Bowl TV spot for Avengers: Infinity War, we see Spider-Man tear off his mask while climbing the alien structure high in the air:
Could this be a nod to that moment in the comics? It would add emotional resonance to the scene as Spider-Man struggles to destroy the structure and eventually falls, only to be saved by Iron Man. Considering the current relationship between Iron Man and Spider-Man in the MCU as a father-son bond, it would make sense.
Though it would be unlikely for Spider-Man to die as he is set for a sequel solo movie already, the moment could be powerful. In Spider-Man: Homecoming we saw Tom Holland’s acting ability in the “Come on Spider-Man!” scene, a reference to the iconic moment from Stan Lee’s Amazing Spider-Man and Holland could definitely pull this moment off as well.
The scene would be powerful, seeing Spider-Man say goodbye and apologizing to his Aunt May, worrying about her when he is the one in danger. Seeing him give his all and come close to death, only to be saved by the father figure in his life at the last moment. And seeing Iron Man say something similar to, “I got you kid, stay with me,” could add gravitas to the movie as a whole. If done correctly, the scene could help set the stakes for the rest of the movie if it takes place towards the beginning.
What do you think? Could we see this moment played out in live-action in just a few months? Tweet us @SuperBroMovies!
