RUMOR: Lucasfilm Has Secretly Hired Women And People Of Color To Work On ‘STAR WARS’ Movies

Following the news that Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss had been hired to work on a new trilogy of Star Wars films, the internet made an astute observation. Star Wars had more or less only been worked on by white men. That led some journalists to do some digging and what they found was very interesting. Lucasfilm has reportedly hired at least one women and one person of color to work on a Star Wars film in secret.

The likely reason the hire has been kept under wraps is that the project or projects that are being developed may not move forward. If the films in question get stuck in development hell it would be a bad look for Lucasfilm to announce them only to eventually pull the plug.

The major question is who are the individuals that have been hired. A name that has been mentioned countless times over the years is Wrinkle in Time director Ava DuVernay. She has a working relationship with Disney and was involved in getting J.J. Abrams signed on as the director of The Force Awakens. It is in no way confirmed that DuVernay has signed onto anything but she seems as likely a candidate as any.

Another name being tossed around is Black Panther director Ryan Coogler. His film currently sits at a 99% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and is gearing up to tear up the box office. Marvel Studios, of course, is also owned by Disney which also gives Coogler a strong relationship with the company.

It’s also entirely possible that if DuVernay or Coogler had been hired that Disney wouldn’t want anything announced until their blockbuster films had been released. Black Panther hits theaters February 16th while DuVernay’s Wrinkle in Time comes out March 9th.

Of course, nothing has been confirmed. We’ll just have to wait and see if and when Lucasfilm decides to announce their newest hires for a galaxy far, far away. –Jackson Hayes
