This month we are due to see the release of the highly anticipated Marvel Studios film Black Panther. The film was written by screenwriter Joe Robert Cole who is due to a have a massive hit on his hands. But it has recently been revealed that he was originally hired to write a very different film for Marvel, War Machine.
In an interview with Complex, Cole detailed how he was originally invited to join Marvel Studios writer’s program, where lesser known characters have screenplays developed for them. According to Cole,
“At that meeting, they also said they were thinking of doing a War Machine movie. I pitched a concept and won that job to write the script but they decided, based on what Iron Man 3 was going to be, they weren’t going to do War Machine anymore. But they asked if I’d be interested in joining their writer’s program instead.”
While Cole didn’t go into detail what his screenplay entailed for the armored avenger it must have been good if Marvel Studios invited him to join its writer’s program. Sadly however, based on the current trajectory of the MCU it seems rather unlikely we will ever see a War Machine solo film, but hopefully the character is due to have a higher status in the MCU after Infinity War.
