A young new hero is making her way to Disney’s small screens.
Laurence Fishburne and Helen Sugland, producers of Black-ish and Grown-ish are developing an animated series based on the popular all-ages Marvel comic Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur. This show is presumably the secret Marvel project Lawrence Fishburne teased he was working on some time ago in addition to Ant-Man and The Wasp. Currently titled Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, it is still being decided on which Disney network the show will air on. Previous animated Marvel shows have aired on Disney XD, but Disney Channel and Disney Junior are technically still options.
The synopsis for the show currently reads:
Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur follows the adventures of nine-year-old super-genius Lunella Lafayette, an African-American girl who teams up with her crimson-colored dinosaur and uses her smarts to save the day.
The character Moon Girl and the titular comic book series was created in 2016 by Amy Reeder, Brandon Montclare and Natacha Bustos. Devil Dinosaur himself is a Jack Kirby creation from 1978 in a series originally intended to tie into an animated show that never happened, so this show is full circle for the out-of-time dino. The comic follows super-smart Inhuman Lunella Layafeyette, aka Moon Girl, and her giant dinosaur friend from the past, Devil Dinosaur. The comic proved a hit in collected editions with a crowd not typically considered the comic book audience: young girls. This show seems to be tapping into that same newly discovered young market.
