Your first look at and details on the Big Bad of Krypton are here.
Played by British actor Blake Ritson, here’s the first image of Brainiac.
Not too bad at all! There’s also a video feature for the character which you can watch right here.
The makeup took from four and a half to seven and a half hours to apply every day. For Riston and the crew, the look was essential to getting the character right.
“It’s chillingly effective. The first week I turned a corner and one of the cast (members) who hadn’t seen the makeup before screamed. A few days later, one of the crew dropped their lunch when they saw me for the first time. Then I knew that we were really on the right track.”
Brainiac will be the Big Bad of the series for now. When Earth time traveler Adam Strange travels to Krypton to tell Superman’s grandfather Seg-El about the future exploits of his grandson, he also warns him about Brainiac, known as the “Collector of Worlds”. While Brainiac is a villain for the citizens of Krypton, Ritson thinks he sees himself as a biblical hero.
I’ve played characters who’ve objectively committed monstrous actions, but feel entirely justified, as they’ve acted from a misplaced sense of a noble cause. Generally speaking, people cast themselves as the hero in their own narrative. Yes, he traverses the universe in a gigantic skull ship, ripping cities out of planets, miniaturizing them and placing them on board. But he does so in the spirit of conservation. In his mind, he’s committed to the ultimate philanthropic act: saving all of creation. In many ways it’s analogous to Noah plucking out two of every animal to ensure their survival, even while knowing that others must perish.”
That “gigantic skull ship” will be making an appearance as well. Ritson humorously noted how much special effects work the show required.
“It involved a lot of filming against a blue screen. If they’d used green screen, I think I would have been somewhat camouflaged.”
Brainiac is shaping up to be an intersting villain on the Superman prequel series. Are you excited? Do you like the look for Brainiac? Let us know at SuperBroMovies.
