Sony’s planned Marvel Universe that focuses on Spider-Man’s biggest villains (and may or may not include the Web Slinger himself) is scheduled to begin with this year’s Venom. The next installment in the franchise centers on Silver Sable and Black Cat (Silver and Black), and was originally planned to begin production in the coming weeks. However, it appears the film is having a hard time getting off the ground because new reports say the production has been delayed indefinitely.

ThatHashtagShow reports that the film has been delayed indefinitely with no new start date set for the film. This shouldn’t come as a surprise since there has been no casting news revealed. Gina Prince-Bythewood has signed on to direct with Lindsey Beer and Tom DeFalco penning the script.

THS does point out that “indefinitely” doesn’t necessarily mean forever. The production could be temporarily delayed just so castings can be finalized and a solid story can be decided upon. However, this could also mean Silver and Black never starts production and never sees the light of day. This wouldn’t come as a a disappointment to many as there haven’t been a lot of fan’s of this film since it was announced, and most aren’t even on board with Sony’s Marvel Universe in the first place

This production delay shouldn’t have any affect on Venom. That movie will likely still come out in October, but there’s no telling what the franchise will look like after that. It wouldn’t be the first time a franchise crashes and burns after the first film. Universal’s Dark Universe fell flat on it’s face after The Mummy was a disappointment and the other planned films were either delayed or canceled.
