After the first trailer for Avengers: Infinity War confirmed the return of the Hulkbuster suit, fans have been speculating who’s in the suit and why it’s even needed. We recently got our answer to the first question via some promo art that made its way online, but the “why” still hasn’t been revealed. Well after doing some Batman-level investigating (not really), a theory arose that could explain why the Hulkbubster suit is in Infinity War.
In order to fully understand the theory, there’s some evidence from the trailer and a set photo that made it’s way online last year that I need to present. If you watched the first trailer (of course you did) you know that the Hulk appears at the very end while Bruce Banner has a larger presence throughout. Take a look at this screenshot below from the teaser, it seems like Banner may have something to do with the new version of the suit.
A piece of promo art recently made its way online revealing the Hulk himself is the one in the suit, you can click here to view it. The image confirmed the fan theory that Hulk or Bruce Banner is in the suit, but there just might be a more to do this than meets the eye. We know that Hulk is in the suit, but it doesn’t mean it started out that way. While some may say that the Hulk could have been separated from Banner and that’s why he’s in the suit, it may be because of one simple reason: Bruce can’t turn into the Hulk for a portion of the film.
The idea is that Bruce can’t turn back into the Hulk because the big green guy doesn’t want to. He could feel bad about what happened the last time he was on Earth, and he refuses to come out of Bruce. There’s also more evidence for this, as another piece of promo art hit the web. Check it out below, it has the Hulk breaking out of the Hulkbuster suit.
So the theory is that Bruce is in fact in the suit for a short time, but is able to turn into the Hulk presumably mid-battle. This may be a turning point for his character in the film, as he now overcomes and forgives himself. It could be a really good development for the character, especially since he isn’t getting a solo film anytime soon.
The idea of having Hulk “bust out” of the suit isn’t actually new, it was originally an idea from Joss Whedon for Age of Ultron. A couple years ago he let it slip that he wanted to do this during the last battle of the film, but since it didn’t end up making the final product he wanted Marvel to hold onto the idea for the future. It seems like we will finally see the moment on the big screen this April.
