The first time actor Clark Gregg made his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was in 2008’s Iron Man as Agent Phil Coulson. There, we were quietly introduced to the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division, also known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Coulson then also made appearances in Iron Man 2 in 2010, and Thor in 2011. By having Coulson in each of those films, he was slowly becoming the man that would bring together a group of individual superheroes for 2012’s Avengers. It was thought that Coulson could be a part of the MCU’s long-term plans.
By the time Avengers came out, Coulson had already garnered a passionate fan base, so it was a shock to everyone when Coulson was stabbed in the back by the film’s main villain, Loki. Coulson’s death is what brought Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye together on the same page to defeat Loki and his Chitauri army and save New York. It was thought that Coulson was done, but was only to be resurrected by Nick Fury and went on to have his own show on ABC, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Coulson has lived on for five seasons.
With Marvel’s TV property getting close to hitting the landmark 100 episodes, the most ever for Marvel TV, the question continues to persist, will the Avengers ever get the chance to find out that their dear friend, Agent Phil Coulson, is alive and around? Gregg is fine with the possibility of not being on the same screen as the Avengers, but is confident that the time to reunite will come.
“When they feel like it’s time to start connecting any of these worlds, they will. I feel like I’ll hear from them then, but in the meantime, I have my hands full trying to do a good job on [Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.]”.
If you have been keeping up to date with the fifth season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Coulson is in the process of dying, but we don’t know how or why he is dying. Last season, Coulson had made a devil’s deal with Ghost Rider, so that could be a reason to why Coulson is dying. We’ll get more answers on that deal once the 100th episode airs.
The head of Marvel television and S.H.I.E.L.D.Jeph Loeb has given us a chance to have more hope of seeing a Phil Coulson-Avengers reunion, despite so much happening in Avengers: Infinity War.
“It’s certainly something that will get resolved, and it may get resolved in a very surprising way.”
The connecting of any these worlds, as Gregg says, could finally be happening and it is possible that we could see a post credit scene after Avengers: Infinity War of Coulson finally meeting up with the Avengers and letting them know that he’s alive and that he brought his friends with him to help out or that there could be a Coulson name drop. I can only imagine the reactions of the Avengers when they find out. If he is indeed in the post credit scene, we could then start thinking about the possibility that Coulson could be involved with Avengers 4, but one step at a time.
