For months, the actors, producers, writers, and powers-that-be over at Marvel Television have promised a game-changing episode that will provide pay-off to longtime fans as well as some jaw-dropping moments that will leave fans begging for more.
And they delivered.
From the first few moments of the episode, its clear that something is very wrong within the lighthouse, which serves as this seasons base of operations for the team. Following the explosion set by the team of government agents tasked with bringing down Coulson’s team and a sneak attack that resulted in Yo-Yo being dismembered, the team is understandably a little shaken up. However, there is no rest for the weary as the explosion, which destroyed three different ancient monoliths, including the one that sent Simmons to Maveth a few seasons ago, caused a dimensional rift in the lighthouse. This rift created a breach to the fear dimension.
Everyone’s greatest fear is about to manifest itself physically and cause a whole mess of troubles for the gang or fugitive agents. Like every milestone episode should, this particular series of events serves as a love letter of sorts to the fans who have stuck with the show since its debut in fall of 2013 and one of the ways it does so is allow fans an inside look into the heads and hearts of the beloved characters; by revealing their biggest fears.
Agent May’s biggest fear is Lash (the Inhuman monster that was once her ex-husband), Deke’s biggest fear is a forest. Yo-Yo’s biggest fear is a Life Model Decoy taking the shape of one of her friends. Daisy’s biggest fear is Hive. All the while, Coulson finally reveals the deal he made with Ghost Rider to gain his help in the team’s war with Aida at the end of season 4.
Coulson, essentially, gave up his life. This means all the science and Kree blood and work that went into restoring Coulson following his murder at the hands of Loki in The Avengers (2012), were wiped and away and Coulson would now slowly die of his injuries caused by the scepter.
This tragic news bring the team to its knees. Daisy is terrified of losing the only father she has ever truly known while Agent May, who along with Coulson has finally started acting on their shared feelings for each other, can’t lose her other half.
Coulson needs for them to be strong in order to restore the symbol of the organization he so passionately believes in, S.H.I.E.L.D.
Coulson volunteers to go on a life-threteneing trip to the lower level of the lighthouse in order to close the breach to the fear dimension and is met by his biggest fear, which strangely takes the embodiment of Mike Peterson, AKA Deathlok. Coulson’s biggest fear? It’s the possibility that none of the events and adventures he’s endured over the course of the last 5 years were real. His biggest fear is that its all been made up in his head as he’s still being operated on following his death in The Avengers.
Coulson, thanks to Deke’s smart thinking, is saved by the real Deathlok as the two team-up to take down both the fear dimension’s versions of Hive and Lash as they are still roaming the area and slowing the breach.
The whole-Coulson-is-dying situation is never fully resolved though, as fans of the show are FINALLY treated to a moment they’ve been waiting years for. The FitzSimmons wedding. Taking place in the forest created as the embodiment of Deke’s fear, Jemma Simmons and Leopold Fitz finally exchange vows and are legally wed in a beautiful ceremony officiated by Coulson himself.
In a few cut scenes between the wedding, Deke speaking with Deathlok, and the general tasked with hunting the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, it is revealed that Deke is actually the grandson of FitzSimmons.
And nobody has any idea. However, the good news means that Fitz and Simmons live long enough to have a child of their own and that child lives long enough to have a child and that child grows to be Deke.
The only question is, will Coulson be around long enough to see all this beauty unfold?
