With a cast as large as the ensemble for the upcoming and highly anticipated Avengers: Infinity War, it’s kind of difficult for fans to invest in a character and just as hard for the directors to focus on any give plot-point.
While characters like Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor having their own sets of prequels for fans to turn to for their fix of Marvel fandom, the big bad of the MCU has nothing but a few scarce end-credits scenes and moments to lead up to his big starring role in the third Avengers film.
When the final full-length trailer for Avengers: Infinity War debuted as well as tickets finally going on sale, Fandango sat down with the directors of the huge film, Joe and Anthony Russo, to try and get a better understanding of how time will be divvied up between the huge egos and characters.
Fandango: You mention some characters are invested with more screen time than others. Can you name which of those characters were invested more?
Joe Russo: Interestingly enough, I’ll start out by saying Thanos, even though he’s not a character that had a huge preexisting story in the Marvel universe. He was a threat but he was not developed in any way up to this point. Thanos has an incredible amount of screen time in this film, in a lot of ways I would say it’s his movie. Our job when we make these films — and what we feel is important to us — is to surprise the audience. We wanted to tell a story that they weren’t expecting, and the story is told from the point of view of a villain, which I think is also really unique and risky for a commercial film that will surprise the audience. I think this is a market where the audience really enjoys innovation and disruption, and we want to do something innovative in this space. So I think Thanos has an incredible amount of screen time, and I think you’ll find that Thor has a really interesting arc in the film. He hasn’t been at the forefront of other Avengers movies but he certainly has a very important role in this film. So I’ll say, Thanos and Thor.
It makes sense that Thanos will be the star of the show as the film is sure to tell his origin story (this coming from the flashbacks seen in the most recent trailer) to help fans understand his motivations for wanting to wipe out half of the universe. Thor, on the other-hand, is going through a character resurgence thanks to the overwhelming success of Thor: Ragnarok, and fans are definitely extremely interested in seeing how his character will bounce back to his mighty ways after losing his father, his hair, his hammer, his planet, and all of the Warriors 3.
