Doctor Strange quickly became a fan favorite after his solo debut in 2016. He made his next on-screen appearance in last year’s Thor: Ragnarök and will play a major role in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War. It has been assumed that due to all his popularity, he would be getting a follow-up film some time soon, but that may not be the case. In a recent interview, Benedict Cumberbatch revealed that he has no idea when the sequel to Doctor Strange will begin production.
When asked if he had any idea when he might begin filming Doctor Strange 2, Cumberbatch replied,
“Not at the moment, no. The master plan is continually in flux, so it would be out-of-order for me to speculate.”
This is very surprising considering every Marvel movie to date other than The Incredible Hulk has had a sequel. There has even already been talk of a Black Panther sequel so surely they would have at least made plans for a sequel to Doctor Strange. There’s still so much room for growth with that character, though, so it would be an injustice for him not to have a second solo outing. They even already set up for a sequel with Baron Mordo turning evil at the end of the first one.
Now, this doesn’t mean we’re not getting a sequel, it just means it probably won’t be soon considering the lead actor doesn’t know anything about it. Even if the sequel doesn’t come soon, though, we could still see the Sorcerer Supreme turn up in other films similarly to how he did in Thor: Ragnarök. He will obviously star in next year’s untitled Avengers movie, but there has also been speculation we will see him turn up in the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel. Needless to say, Doctor Strange won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.
