Ever since it was shown to us in the post-credit scene of the first Avengers film that Thanos was behind the Chatari invasion, fans have been wondering about the mysterious figure. As the MCU progressed our knowledge of the Mad Titan did as well. Soon finding out he had taken in aliens to be his “children” like Gamora and Nebula, he lost his home planet to an event he knew was coming but wasn’t allowed to stop, and that he is on his quest in Infinity War because he believes the universe has become unbalanced.
Thanos has been built up since the beginning so Marvel certainly wants to deliver on the character, especially with the MCU constantly being ridiculed for its lack of compelling villains. When Collider sent people to the set of Infinity War they spoke to the writers of the film Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely (the pair also wrote all three Captain America films) and they revealed ‘Infinity War’ will serve as Thanos backstory.
“One of the big challenges is how to make sure he’s not just a relentless machine collecting stones like he’s going shopping. So we want to give him a full weighted emotional story. You can kind of say this is Thanos’ origin story, so that he will get the weight in any of the previous heroes in terms of the decisions he has to make in order to get what he wants.”
They also commented on how Thanos doesn’t consider himself the villain and two of their favorite MCU villains have been Loki and Killgrave and they attribute that to their screen time and family connections to the hero. So it’s safe to assume Thanos will receive a lot of screen time along with a focus on his relationship with Gamora and Nebula.
