One of the biggest complaints you’ll hear about a Marvel movie is that they’re too similar. A lot of them follow similar story threads with almost identical villains and the same type of humor sprinkled throughout. This occurrence has been coined as the Marvel Formula. It looks like things will change with Infinity War, though. Robert Downey Jr. has teased that the newest Avengers film will not tread familiar ground.
When asked how the franchise keeps audiences interested, Downey replied that the key is to never repeat something, even if it has been proven successful in the past.
“I read in some magazine that the No. 1 fan-voted moment was the airport fight in Captain America: Civil War (2016) because there are so many superheroes at once. But people don’t want a repeat of what’s worked well. The challenge this time was how do we expand something without repeating something that has been executed well before. It’s the anti-process, if you will. Because usually, if something works, you just keep doing that.”
This film isn’t just another installment in the franchise, this is what the last ten years have been building towards, so the Russo brothers obviously didn’t want to go the conventional route. This should come as a relief to fans who are hoping to be surprised by Infinity War.
The most beloved Marvel films are the ones that subvert the genre. The Winter Soldier, Guardians Of The Galaxy, and Thor: Raganarök all went against the audience’s preconceived notions, and that’s why they stand as some of the strongest films Marvel has to offer.
