Ever since his superhero debut in 2008’s hit film Iron Man, Robert Downey, Jr. has become one with the role of Tony Stark, and the face of Marvel’s wildly successful cinematic universe. He’s been lovingly embraced by fans as the Armored Avenger, and it’s hard to see anyone else stepping into the role that Downey has spent the last decade molding into his own. However, Infinity War co-director Joe Russo recently seemed to echo what many of us fans have long feared; Downey won’t always be Iron Man.
During an interview with Hindustan Times, Joe Russo addressed the long rumored topic of Downey’s departure from the MCU, stating that he himself can’t see anyone else taking over the role of Tony Stark.
“There is nobody who can take over Iron Man from Robert. I don’t think the audience would accept that. He never mentioned to us about leaving ‘Iron Man’, but it will happen in some point of time.”
Russo goes on to say that even though Downey won’t always be Iron Man, he’s still unsure of exactly when the actor will decide to hang up the armor for good. “He can’t play the character forever,” says Russo. “I’m sure there are lots of other things he wants to do in his career. He loves playing the character, I know that, and we love working together. We will see where it goes from here.”
Avengers: Infinity War marks Downey’s 9th time playing Iron Man in the MCU, which currently boasts an impressive number of 18 films. Let us know how you feel about Downey’s potential exit from the MCU in the comments below, or sound of on Twitter at SuperBroMovies.
