Have you wondered how Thanos got to the very moment of wanting to destroy half of the universe? We all know that the MCU follows the comics to a certain degree, but is definitely a different story from the comics. We’ve seen major events such as Avengers, Age of Ultron, Civil War, and Ragnarok come to life on screen in very different ways from the comics.
Now, we are almost to the final battle, ten years in the making: Infinity War. This film will be a culmination of everything we’ve seen thus far. Not only are we getting what we’ve been waiting for since 2008, we are also getting a novel dedicated to Thanos’ origin story to tie-in to the MCU.
Yes, you read that correctly, a novel about Thanos’ origin story. The book will be written by New York Times bestselling author Barry Lyga (I Hunt Killers). The book is set to release this November on the 20th. The film will be different from the comic, obviously, but does that mean that the book will be too? We will see, when the book releases later this year. Lyga sat down with i09 to discuss the book, and he had some very interesting things to say about the synopsis seen here:
Space. Reality. Mind. Power. Time. Soul.
Before creation itself, there were six singularities. Then the universe exploded into existence, and the remnants of these systems were forged into concentrated ingots…
Only beings of immense power can hope to wield these stones, but for those who are worthy, the powers of a god await.
Thanos is one such being. But he wasn’t always.
Born on a doomed world and cast out by his people for his genius, physical deviancy, and pragmatic but monstrous ideas, Thanos is determined to save the galaxy from the same fate as his homeworld… no matter how many billions have to die.
Learn the origins of the most formidable foe the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange, and Black Panther have ever faced—a foe whom even a group of remarkable people, pulled together to fight the battles nobody else could, will fail to stop….
Dread it. Run from it. Destiny still arrives.
Thanos is here.
Lyga spoke on how he feels about writing the first tie-in book for the MCU. This was his response:
Okay, I have to admit something here: Until you said “the first, official tie-in novel for young adults,” I actually had no idea that this was the case! I guess I just assumed that over the past 10 years there had been another one—at least one!—out there that I wasn’t aware of. So, I wasn’t scared or intimidated at all. But I guess now I am. Thanks!
This will be the first book to tie-in with the MCU and explain Thanos’ origin. You can read the full interview on i09, and get just as excited as we are!
UPDATE: The novel will not be official canon as was previously reported:
